Amanda Lynn Mayhew’s appearance at the 70th-annual Schumacher Lions Sportsman Show will be something of a homecoming for her.
“My mom (Irena Audziss) was born and raised in Virginiatown and my dad’s (Alexander Mayhew) family is from Kirkland Lake,” said Mayhew, who is the host of Just Hunt. “They met in Manitouwadge in the early ’70s and had us. Then we did a bit of moving around in the mid ’80s where I ended up living in Holtyre in ’86 and attended Matheson Public School and high school in Iroquois Falls.
“It is going to be so exciting to get back there and see everyone again who is still in the area.”
The Sportsman Show is being held at the McIntyre Community Centre and Curling Rink on April 22 and 23.
Canada Hunts, the program Mayhew hosts, is an outdoors, hunting and fishing series that airs on a speciality channel called WILD TV.
Mayhew attributes her lifelong interest in hunting and fishing to growing up in the North.
“I was born into it, I thought that was just how life was,” she told The Daily Press. “The appeal was habit, then turned into passion, everything about the outdoors.”
When it comes to hunting and fishing, Mayhew said she is game for “anything that is in season that I have a tag and a firearm for. I dabble in it all. I rifle hunt for bear in Northern Ontario — my favourite meat — bow and gun hunt for deer in Southern Ontario, bow and gun hunt for turkey in Southern Ontario, rifle hunt for moose in Northern Ontario — I was up in Larder Lake in 2015 — and of course waterfowl with my trusty Weatherby shotgun.”
