Woodstock Hospital psychiatrist Dr. Shabbir Amanullah will be a keynote speaker at an event that will explore topics such as staying safe online, cultivating self compassion and learning resiliency skills.
Amanullah will examine how to develop positive relationships with one’s child when using social media online.
He will also discuss applications that are positive and beneficial to mental health and wellbeing.
“Dr. Amanullah will be speaking about issues surrounding media and social media, and some challenges we are faced with in the 21st century,” said Tiffany Birtch, principal of College Avenue Secondary School. “His topic is media, technology, porn and living in the 21st century, and the impact this is having on our youth and society.”
The second annual CASS Cares Health and Wellness event, which features child minding services and lunch, is funded by a Parents Reaching Out Grant.
Following Amanullah’s presentation at 9 a.m. there will be three breakout sessions with a variety of choices including a session for educators about enhancing teamwork, Kids Help Phone, therapy dogs and self care, social media awareness and impact, and yoga and Zumba.
The event will also include a display fair featuring a number of community groups and organizations.
“There are a number of opportunities for people to interact with the community as well,” Birtch said.
Birtch is hoping people will register online at www.tvdsb.ca/HealthWellnessConference so they have an idea of how many people will be in attendance.
But she said people are also welcome to show up at the last minute.
